Story
performance with American Sign Language
Deaf
actor Alan "SPO" Schwartz and storyteller
Kathleen Zundell have teamed up to create an
exciting program of world folktales in spoken word and
ASL. "SPO" means, "Signed Performer Only."
Combining
mime, movement and sign language with the oral tradition,
these two performers produce an amazing multi-cultural
tale telling experience! For hearing and hearing impaired
audiences, these stories are for the eye, ear, and the
heart. For children, their families, and friends. Audience
participation is always included.
Actor
Alan Schwartz is also known as "SPO"
- "Sign Performance Only." He got his start
at the Center Light Theatre in Chicago, followed by
summer school at the National Theatre of the Deaf. From
there, he was hired at the L.A. Little Theatre of the
Deaf, and went on to teach and give drama workshops
at a variety of primary and secondary schools as part
of Deaf West Theatre. He's been the acting teacher at
the Deaf Arts Council's Multimedia Arts Camp, and has
been performing for families for more than ten years
as a member of Talking Hands - a storytelling group
that appears at libraries, museums and schools. He has
been master of ceremony for a variety of events, including
Deaf Expo West and East.
"Talking
Hands" has recently performed at the Burbank Public
Libraries, Washington Street School, Slavin Childrens
Library, and the Riverside Public Library.
